What Norwood 2 looks like

Norwood 2 is the earliest stage of male pattern hair loss that most people notice. The hairline has pulled back at the temples in a triangular shape, usually evenly on both sides, and there may be slight thinning along the middle of the front. In the Norwood classification, the recession at this stage is still fairly shallow and does not reach far back towards the top of the head.

Many men with a mature hairline sit at this stage. Doctors do not treat Norwood 2 as true baldness, which begins at stage 3, so the first question is often whether you need surgery at all.

Typical graft range

A Norwood 2 hairline usually needs about 750 to 1,500 grafts, placed across both temples and along the front edge. The lower end suits softening the temple corners, and the upper end suits lowering and filling the whole front line a little.

That lines up with common session sizes. DermNet notes that sessions of 750 to 2,000 grafts are not uncommon, and a two-centre study of men mostly at early stages averaged 1,290 grafts per patient. Is one session realistic?

Yes. If surgery suits you, one session is usually enough to restore the temples. The bigger issue is the future. Norwood 2 is often an early stage in a process that will keep going, and a hairline filled in now can end up stranded in front of thinning hair later.

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery says it is extremely difficult to predict the pattern of hair loss at a young age, and its FUE guidelines advise avoiding FUE in patients under 25 for the same reason. How the procedure is usually done

At this graft count, most clinics use FUE, where individual grafts are taken from the back and sides of the head with a small punch. It leaves tiny round scars rather than a line, and the donor area usually looks normal again once short hair regrows. Our FUE hair transplant page explains the method.

The design matters more than the number. Single-hair grafts are placed right at the front to create a soft, irregular edge, with two-hair grafts just behind for density. A hairline that is too straight, too low or too dense looks transplanted, even with a small graft count.

Recovery is usually quick at this size. Most people are back to desk work within days, and the scabs clear at about one to two weeks. Results then take around a year to mature, as with any hair transplant.

Alternatives to consider

At this stage many doctors suggest starting with medical treatment and watching how your hair behaves for a year or so. Medication a doctor may prescribe can slow further loss, and your GP or a dermatologist can talk you through it. If the recession is stable, you may decide it suits you and do nothing.
